Top 3 Body Positive Influences I wish I had as a Teenager

Last weekend my wild night consisted of attempting to do one of those sheet mask facials, ok are those really hard to keep on or is it just me? Yes, I agree its me. Also, made myself a nice dinner and settled in on the couch to get through a book that has taken me forever to crack into. Flash to 10 min later and I am browsing through Netflix. Not sure how I got to that point, but just roll with it.

So after attempting to search for Christmas Vacation and coming up with no luck I went to the What’s Popular section. Then I came across Dumplin. You guysssss…as you know already I am a Dolly Parton fan and I have seen her all over promoting her new album for this film. I thought it was going to only be in theatres. What do you knowwwwww, it was showing on Netflix! Then flash forward midway through the movie and I am literally balling my eyes out one minute, laughing the next, and then having these overwhelming flashbacks of how much I could relate to the star, Danielle Macdonald. The emotions she felt in her life experiences in one way or another I could really relate to and honestly no matter what size you are you can probably relate to as well. After the movie was over and I cleaned off my mascara that was running down my face, no joke I legit scared myself in the mirror, I started to just think about the film as I was getting ready for bed.

The one thing that stuck out in my head was that I really wished there was a movie that was like this when I was a teenager or younger. Instead numerous films and tv shows portrayed the girl who was curvier as the crazy funny one or the one that gets bullied in the plot line. Never the one that gets the guy, follows her dreams, and is the main star seen in such a positive light. Now I am sure there may be some films I’m missing where this is not always the case, but honestly not many come to mind in my opinion! Well, for those that have not seen the movie I do not want to make this post a spoiler alert so I guess I will make it about the 3 things I wish I had as influences in my life as a teenager. Ok, here we go…

Body-Positive social media influencers, models, movie stars, etc.

For real, when Ashley Graham strutted down the runway in lingerie during NYFW with Addition Elle it literally gave me chills. Here is a woman that is giving you high fashion vibes and is making it about what she is wearing not what her size is. She is a woman and she is fierce!

Body Positive Events like the CurvyCon

It is so amazing to see the events that are from national to local that are all about supporting others local influencers or bloggers, but also bringing people together that share a common bond of changing the narrative to all bodies are beautiful! Honestly, you don’t have to be plus to be a part of this conversation. We all have struggles in our minds that we deal with, but having a support system is soooo important.

Brands that offer above a size 12

It makes me tear up just thinking about this. I remember the days in high school of strolling around the mall with my friends and stopping into Hollister and Abercrombie playing dress up in the fitting rooms. That feeling of literally nothing fitting and feeling ashamed of yourself crying in the fitting room trying to hide it from your friends is a feeling that truly makes my stomach turn even as an adult.

Honestly, I feel like if there was an offering of a range of sizes this would have made me see myself in a different light, a more positive light. Of course, there are a lot of parts to the puzzle of self-esteem, but I feel this is totally a piece of it! I felt as though I had this creative vision, but I wasn’t able to express it due to limited size options. Remember this was pre-online shopping so what was at the mall is what you got.  The fashion industry still has a longggggggg way to go in terms of inclusive sizing and diversity, but brands like Eloquii, Modcloth, Gwynnie Bee, Ellos, ASOS, Addition Elle and more are leading the way to change the narrative to provide stylish and unique pieces at an affordable price.

I feel like there are so many more, but this is a good start, maybe a part 2 will be in the near future. Now what are your top 3 things?

Also, note myself in a blonde wig and sequin dress because I was Dolly Parton for Halloween this year so it felt appropriate to add a photo of this moment of being one of my favorite music and style icons! Ok…now go watch Dumplin!

Thankful for Happiness!

After a day filled with family, laughs, and lots of food it was nice to take today to just slow down a bit. Got me thinking about how often we take care of our physical bodies so much and sometimes forget that the mind goes right up there with it. Honestly, I neglect my mental health quite often.  Feel free to call me the queen of overthinking…I tried to have that rhyme, but I am pretty sure it didn’t…so anywhoooo. Last year I did a post about this topic, but hey why not make it a tradition!

Every September (YES…I know it is November…but at least I’m still posting this!) Tashira, Creator of the blog Politics and Fashion (sidenote, if you are not following her you need to change that ASAP!) She created an amazing 21 Day Happiness Project where you dedicate yourself to doing one thing that gives you joy each day. The main goal of it is to keep it minimal on the money you have to spend and really focus on the simple things that gives you joy. Guys no joke every year I do this project it is always alot harder to stick to!

I always have to play the elimination game of actions that cost money that give me joy and get down to basics. So I wanted to give you guys a bit of a recap on the actions that I try and incorporate into my weeks that give me that warm and fuzzy feeling of happiness. The point of this post is not to be like “oh hayyy guysssss look how happy and wonderful I ammmmmmmm!” Because let’s be real life has its up and downs for sure! This project really helps me get back on track all thanks to Tashira! I hope that you all can take 10 minutes or more to give to yourself! (insert big virtual hug)

  1. Morning coffee with my boyfriend
  2. Hugging my Mom
  3. Going to lunch with a friend
  4. Calling a friend just to chat
  5. Signing up for a library card
  6. Going to the Farmers Market
  7. Running- Ok, lets be honest more like a slow jog
  8. Trying a new recipe- never baking though…I am an awful baker
  9. Planning outfits for future blog posts
  10. Doing an at home facial
  11. Going to the beach
  12. Reading to my nieces
  13. Complimenting a stranger
  14. Trying a new restaurant/food
  15. Singing in my car
  16. Buying myself flowers
  17. Going for a hike
  18. Face timing my sister
  19. Sharing my love for fashion with others via my blog
  20. Listening to music
  21. Strolling around little downtown’s such as Annapolis or Old Town with a hot cup of coffee just to window shop

Also, may as well wrap in a Thanksgiving vibe with this post…I am thankful for the feeling of happiness and that I am blessed to be able wake up and experience these feelings that I take for granted at times.

Ok, also what does the pictures of this floral maxi have to do with this post? Well, I met with my friend Kelly-Lynne, fellow blogger of the Low Low Style, to do photos together and we laughed and truly had such an amazing time. So there you go this is a snapshot of me in the midst of a feeling of joy in my creativity. Oh and while we are at it may as well do a round up of fall maxis that need to be in your closet this season! Have a great weekend everyone!

Weekend Recap- Hollywood Casino in Harpers Ferry, WV!

If you had a chance to see one of my recent Instagram posts I chatted with you guys about how casinos as of lately hold a bit of a sentimental place in my heart. A casino was actually the last place my family, which included my Dad, had an outing to for my birthday over a year ago when they were visiting me. Around a month later my Dad passed away. Thinking about him playing all of the penny slots with me and just overall enjoying ourselves gives me a little moment of joy when strolling through casino doors.

With that being said I was super pumped when Hollywood Casino at Charlestown Raceway asked Dani, of Blonde in the District, and I to come to the O.A.R concert two weekends ago in Harpers Ferry, WV! Full disclosure I can easily lose $20 in about 20 seconds on penny slots and I am awful at card games. You better believe though that I love being a cheerleader for my friends who are hitting it big at the Blackjack table or being moral support when they are losing too. Speaking of, I was pleasantly pleased with the variety of game tables, slots, and also the horse track attached!

To recap our visit it was super convenient to get to the casino from our hotel, which if you remember was the River Riders Family Adventure Resort. There is a free shuttle that you can schedule to take you there and pick you up, which is especially convenient if you do not want to worry about driving if you have enjoyed a drink or two with dinner.

There is an awesome variety of food options from getting fancy schmancy at their steakhouse, Final Cut, or if you want to be where the action is there is also the Skybox Sports Bar that overlooks the casino floor. We chose the Skybox and seriously had the best seat in the house. I absolutely recommend their fried pickles…delish! Speaking of food and sidenote, I found out that the casino is hosting the West Virginia BBQ Fest September 1!

Well, I guess it’s not always all about food, well most of the time it is…but also a super exciting addition to the casino is the Sportsbook that is opening September 1 too. Whew what a weekend it will be!

Then of course the main event was the O.A.R concert. What I loved about the venue was its size. It was almost like no matter where you sat in the concert space you still had an amazing view and it did not feel overcrowded. The light show was on point and of course O.A.R was totally a hit…it seriously brought so many memories back of my college days belting out “It was a crazy game of poooookerrrr…” how ironic huh? To check out the full list of amazing events they have happening follow this link, but Sinbad is coming 9/1 and Jay Leno is on 9/15!

Ohhhh and speaking of that, did I mention that I am doing a giveaway that includes 2 tickets to see Sinbad or Jay Leno!? To enter, go to my latest post on my Instagram page (@dreamyrealist_) and I will be announcing the winner Friday 8/24 on my Instagram stories!

So if you are looking for a quick weekend gettaway and you want a mix of the great outdoors and with some night life mixed in Hollywood Casino Charlestown Raceway is only about 2 hours from DC…jackpot!

My Totally TUBE-ular Time with River Riders Family Adventure Resort!

Ever have those weekends where you really want to get out of 9-5 grind and have a lil jam sesh with Mother Nature? Of course, at first you think ok camping sounds amazing! Then you realize wait, I don’t have a tent. Then the thought of after a long week sleeping on the solid ground may not feel as appealing. Oh and not owning a camping grill or gear for the outdoors. This camping idea has really escalated quickly…forget it I will just Netflix all weekend, take 24 naps, and eat a sleeve of Oreos.

Does this cycle of having the idea of an amazing weekend happen to you, but the frustration of not knowing where to start sets in, and thennnnnn you just creep on back to your comfort zone sound familiar?! Well, my friends I have done the dirty work for you and have the BEST quick weekend getaway that has everything you need all in one place. Great accommodations, amazing food, and awesome adventures at River Riders Family Adventure Resort!

So my girl Dani, of Blonde in the District, and I hit the ol dusty trail and made our way to Harpers Ferry, WV! (Insert my awful singing rendition of Country Roads by John Denver…West Virginnnnnnia, mountain mamaaaaa, take me homeeeee, country roaaaaads) which is only a little over two hours outside of DC! We checked into the River Riders Family Adventure Resort, which like I mentioned literally has everything you need all in one place. First of all, the accommodations on site have rooms that are completely affordable and the staff is so attentive with their amazing customer service. Forget about driving around trying to find some grub since they have a pub right on the resort. We definitely got our groove on with some appetizers, which I totally suggest the chicken quesadillas or the Bavarian pretzels with delicious beer cheese. Oh and if you do not know what an Orange Crush is that should be the #1 thing you order from the drink menu, super refreshing!

Then after we had our stomachs full we were ready to hit the water for a bit of river tubing! No joke, we literally just walked down a path and BAM there is the facility to get geared up for the rafts. The staff there were super efficient and made you feel totally at ease with a very informative safety presentation, which you know I am all about safety first! Then we loaded up in these bright neon buses and made our way down to the water. Best of all we did not need to lug our tubes around it was really easy to get right into the water. Then it was time to start the maximum chilling as we floated along the river listening to all songs that were anything water related…Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou…ok that is the only songs I can think of that involve water…oh wait…Waterfalls by TLC!

The flat river tubing was super smooth and surpriseingly I didn’t fall in the water or lose anything valuable in the river, which is usually my routine on these kind of excursions. Also, it was super easy to find our endpoint of where to get off at with River Riders staff that loaded up our rafts and promptly got us back to the resort.

There is also such a variety of other activities you can do through the River Riders Family Adventure Resort too such as ziplining, white water rafting, aerial adventure park, and there is also free shuttles to the Hollywood Casino Charles Town! So if this all sounds snazzy, River Riders Family Adventure Resort is giving 5% off your purchase if you use code “TUBEULAR” via their website that can be used towards any activity in their adventure park. Now go get your tubing on my friends!
