After a closet clean out with my clients as we stand among the bags of clothing looking over it feels like we have just climbed Mount Everest. In these bags can consist of items that are too small, out of style, a wee bit worn, and the list can go on. Now what to do with all of this clothing!?

I am sure your first thought is to take it all to Goodwill, which I agree is an amazing cause to support and absolutely should be considered.  For some of your pieces that still have the tags on them or are literally brand new and maybe just are not the right fit and it is too late to return why not try and make a little cash money to put into your clothing, travel, pay for kids summer camp, or just a “treat yo self” fund!

Here are a couple of recommendations that I have personally used and recommend to my clients of where and how you can sell these pieces that are like new!

ThredUp

This service is great because you can sign up for an account and they they send you a bag with a pre-printed label.  They keep what they will sell for you and give you money up front.  You can select the option for them to donate what they don’t take or they can send it back to you! Here is the website for more info.

Poshmark

This is an app that you can download and upload photos of items you want to sell.  What is great about this is that you are in control of how much you sell an item for, which is great for designer pieces like bags, shoes, etc.  Here is the website/app info also you can shop my closet at my handle @cfeeney1122

Consignment Boutiques

If you are local to the DC metro I take items to Current Boutique or Diva Designer Consignment both in Old Town, Alexandria.  Typically consignment shops take items that are mainly within current trend of the past couple of years and others can be more on the vintage side. Each consignment store runs their pricing of items and payouts differently, but just doing a simple Google search of shops near you is easy!

Dress for Success

Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. They have scheduled donation hours you can drop off items or you can volunteer to assist in sorting the pieces that are brought, serve as a mentor, review resumes, etc. Check out their website for more info!
